eduroam - A New Service for Worldwide Network Access

On December 21, 2012, the UNT System joined leading research institutions by implementing eduroam(education roaming), a worldwide network access service. eduroam allows users (researchers, faculty, students, staff) from participating institutions to securely access the Internet from any eduroam-enabled institution.

John Hooper

John Hooper to Resume Sole Appointment at UNT

John Hooper will return full time to the role of UNT CIO and Vice Provost for Information Technology on February 1. Provost Warren Burggren and UNT System CIO Michael DiPaolo praised Hooper recently, noting that he has had a pivotal role in helping shape and lead the formation of UNT’s IT Shared Services initiative.

UNT Personal Web Page Server Termination

The personal web page site, people.unt.edu, will be shut down as of May 31, 2013. This service has not kept pace with contemporary developments in web publishing, so it will be retired in favor of some new services to be announced at a later date. UNT students or employees who still maintain information on people.unt.edu should download and save a local copy as soon as possible.

New Computer Kiosks Available in Sage Hall

Google Docs and Phishing Alert

UNT System IT Shared Services recently announced that certain kinds of e-mail messages will be subject to quarantine, in particular, messages that contain a Google Doc link. According to a message from System CIO Michael DiPaolo, "These emails are being quarantined because of an increase in phishing attacks using Google Docs."

Randy, AKA R.K., was a UNT student and worked as a Documentation Services Assistant for me back in the late 1990s. He is now famous as the creator of the award-winning webcomic SOMETHING POSITIVE! and is the 2013 Keynote Speaker for the UNT Comics Studies Conference.

UNT Plans High Performance Computing Upgrade

In 2009, UNT made a major investment in supporting computational research with the purchase of a large-scale campus-wide High Performance Computing (HPC) installation that the University named Talon. The Talon system was expected to operate for three years, after which a replacement system would need to be purchased.  Talon is now in its fourth year of operation, and since High Performance Computing stresses the compute servers by constantly applying 100 percent processing loads, disk and memory failures are becoming more common as the equipment ages.
